Many athletes both male and female still continue to wear anything but compression shorts while they workout, practice & even participate in games. There is a reason why this inexpensive piece of clothing can help improve performance and reduce the risk of injuries.
What Are Compression Shorts?
Compression shorts are usually made of a spandex type material that fits snug and provides a compression effect to the muscle tissue, in this case, the glutes, quads & hamstring musculature. Keeping the muscles compressed allows for the tissue to maintain its elastic component over time and keep the blood from pooling which reduces the amount of swelling after workouts.
Some great research performed by Dr. William Kraemer explains how the compression shorts can enhance some of these mechanisms such as proprioception, reduction of muscle oscillations, optimize blood flow, and a reduction in blood pooling and swelling…along with maintaining repeated jump power output.
If you are a Strength Coach or if you are a just a parent dressing your son or daughter for workouts/practices/games, be sure that they are wearing some type of compression garment as it may be beneficial to performance!
